Today I actually served as a substitute teacher because Ms. Leamer wasn't feeling well this morning. This opportunity provided me with great experience because it marked the first time that I subbed outside of the Fairbanks Northstar Borough school district. Also because there was testing going on I was able to have two free periods this morning.
Because my classroom was empty Ashley (who also served as a Substitute teacher this morning for Mr. Moore, as he proctored testing) brought down Mr. Moore's 6th grade English class. At this time the 9th and 10th graders were busy taking the AMP tests. This went on both Tuesday and Thursday. The AMP test is a new restructured version of the High School Qualifying Exam. Students must pass this in order to receive a diploma at graduation. Because half of the high school was off testing, my first two classes did not have any students. Then third hour was the Alaska Studies class where I had a few students. For this students simply worked on their "American Territory Study Guides." After lunch, which again was delicious. I went back to Ms. Leamer’s room to teach middle school history. First I had a class full of 7th graders and we started class with silent reading, then after 10 minutes I took role and began class. I then had them play about 10 minutes of Charades/Pictionary with their history vocab.cards, after that they then completed a chapter review that was located at the end of the chapter. The next class consisted of 8th graders. In this class I learned how important it is to create an upbeat play list. I was extremely thankful that I had a vast selection of music from my days as an elementary teacher in Fairbanks. Ms. Leamer left plans for this class to play Charades/Pictionary which they absolutely enjoyed. My last class of the day was very easy going. I had 1 student for Personal Finance because the other student was competing in the Indian, Eskimo Olympics. This course served as a Study Hall for the student who came to class.
Overall my day went very smoothly and I told my students that tomorrow is my last day and that I’m sad to be leaving.
